October & November: AVE Events

Additional to the usual happy hour drinks and casual get-to-know-each other environment we will also be hosting a discussion regarding sexual assault. Here is a brief introduction to our speaker, Dr. Billie Thurston and the topic written by AVE Founder, Joy Brown.

Dr. Billie Thurston from the University of Calgary is going to talk about a program that was designed for female university students, aimed at teaching women how to recognize risky situations and resist sexual coercion. The study was done at three Canadian universities and it showed that this program almost halved the risk of rape.

Ms. Thurston is one of the researchers who developed the SARE (Sexual Assault Resistance Education) program. She will speak to us about what key learnings came out of their study. This knowledge is something all women should have. Joy Brown, AVE Co-Founder, has suggested that we should encourage the creation of a SARE program tailored to young women in the oil and gas industry! A spirited discussion is sure to follow – join us.
