Rules, Rights, and Weed

AVE Network is excited to announce its first Fall Mini-Panel Event on Tuesday, September 18th from 5-7PM at the Wednesday Room. Our panelists, consisting of Sr. HR Advisor Serena Staples and Associate Lawyer Nakul Bhatia will be delving into the hot topic of the new cannabis laws, especially with respect to how it affects you as either an employee/employer and knowing what your rights are. Come prepared with your own questions to ask our expert panel! Tickets are available through Eventbrite (link below). As always, there will be a chance to network and some light snacks will be provided.

Meet the Panelists:

Serena Staples is a certified Human Resources professional with a diverse background in energy, healthcare, social work and fine arts which offers a uniquely caring and entrepreneurial perspective to the way she views business and its most precious resource—people.

Serena currently serves as a Senior Human Resources Advisor in Calgary. Serena has provided HR support to the corporate functions both regionally and internationally with particular focus in the areas of compensation, employee relations and talent management. Prior to this role, she was the Account Manager for MRX Solutions, a Vancouver based Practice Management company delivering digital enterprise solutions in private healthcare. Serena holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours Degree from the University of Calgary and Human Resources Management Certificate from Mount Royal University.

Nakul Bhatia has experience in many areas of litigation – in particular, corporate and commercial disputes, construction disputes, securities litigation, employment matters, oil and gas litigation and insurance litigation. He has represented clients in mediations, before the Provincial Court of Alberta and at the Court of Queen’s Bench. Nakul attended law school at the University of Alberta, graduating in 2015. While in law school, Nakul was on the Dean’s list, volunteered with Student Legal Services, was a finalist in the Brimacombe Moot and participated in the Mathews Dinsdale Labor Arbitration moot. He was the vice-chair of the Articling Committee, took part in Law Show and was on the Law Rugby team. He also spent one semester at the Charles University School of law in Prague.
